Through a partnership between the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and the National Safety Council (NSC), the purpose of this research project was to better understand compensation trends among Safety, Health, and Environmental (SH&E) professionals.
This calculator is based on a salary survey conducted and reported in 2020 by Readex Research, an independent company.
The survey sample was selected by Readex Research from lists of contacts provided by each of the partnering organizations, as follows:
• 42,753 emailable BCSP active certification holders (CSP, SMS, ASP, OHST, CHST, STS, STSC, CIT, and/or GSP), excluding those who opted out of special offers and those classified as retired.
• 20,311 emailable safety professionals who are NSC members, excluding those who opted out of special offers and those classified as retired.
For the data collection,
Readex emailed the sample in the name of an officer from the
respective partner list after de-duplication. Data was collected
from April 22 to May 6, 2020, and the survey was closed for tabulation with 9,225 responses.
This salary calculator includes data from all respondents
who indicated they were employed full time and provided compensation information
as of January 1, 2020.
By checking boxes on the Salary Calculator page, the user can build a nearly infinite number of different queries on this data — learning typical compensation for those holding a
speicifc license/credential in California, for instance. Ranges can be built up (e.g., those
in California OR Nevada) by checking more than one box for a given variable. Clicking INCLUDE ALL removes all filters for that variable.
As selections are made,
the page refreshes and shows five statistics for both the user's
selected situation and for all respondents (for comparison) on
two measures: base annual salary, and other compensation (see
Definitions).
Note that results are not displayed if fewer than 10 cases meet the selection criteria — when this happens, revise your selections by checking more boxes or INCLUDE ALL for variables of interest.
